sync, sanc, sunc?
I had my first experience with an Apple retail store today; Alan was with me. I felt out of place with no cash register in sight and the salespeople dressed so casually, but they were professional and efficient. Alan fit right in and found a computer to play games on while I had our iPod serviced. They had to wipe it clean of our music and the salesman explained that they would "sync" some of their music on it to test it. It went well--was free!!!--and as we were leaving, Alan asked me what "sync" meant. I explained, starting with the Greek roots syn and chronos. I was uncertain at first, wondering if I had the only 11 year old in the country who didn't know the word "sync." But then I decided I was proud and that Alan might just be able to make his way in the world despite our neglect of his practical education. Then, in the car, Alan asked if he could listen to the iPod to see what music they "sanc" onto it. When he found that it was all rock music, he said he wished something better had been "sunc" on it. I decided not to correct him; I am happy with him the way he is.
